Implementing Enterprise 2.0 : some examples

Over the last 6 months I've been on the look out for documented examples of the use of social media within workplace learning for my Social Learning Handbook.   My  list now contains examples of its use for both formal social learning as well as for enterprise sharing and collaboration.

In December/January I added links to a 6-part series by Bill Ives on the Fast Forward blog about implementing Enterprise 2.0 at Booz Allen, where he discusses the business drivers and components, change management efforts and results, the operational and financial impact, as well as the lessons learned.

I've now just added a similarly structured series of postings about implementing Enterprise 2.0 at Vistaprint, by Jacob Morgan at Cloud Avenue.  I really liked the last section about the key take-ways from all their 2.0 efforts:

"The key lessons here were to allow ideas to follow the passion path.  It is absolutely crucial to allow employees to stand behind their ideas, to follow their passions, and to really get their ideas in front of the right people."

Learning & Performance 2.0 Master Class, London, 30 April

On April 30th I am running a 1-day event - Using Social Media in Learning - as one of the Day 3 activities at the informatology 2010 Strategies for Success Conference in London (28-30 April).

The masterclass will be divided into 4 main sessions, each of which will focus on one of the types of learning that takes place in organisations - Formal Structured Learning, Personal Directed Learning, Group Directed Learning and Intra-Organisational Learning - and the key social technologies that can be used to support it.

This will be a highly participative, interactive and social event which will include a number of individual and group activities based around the use of different social technologies.

This site provides a useful and very simple bookmarking service for Twitter.

They follow your Twitter feed, and whenever one of your tweets contains a URL, they add it to your delicious.com bookmarks.

You can optionally, bookmark URLs in @replies to you, and they''ll even add a delicious tag identifying the sender if you like.

Are you being sold social snake oil?

Harold Jarche wrote a great blog posting today called Social snake oil (I've re-used his graphic here  too!).

To highlight some of his argument. Harold says that  ..

"As soon as the software vendors and marketers get hold of a good idea, they pretty well destroy it"

and that "social learning is being picked up by software vendors and marketers as the next solution-in-a-box, when it’s more of an approach and a cultural mind-set".

Furthermore, that "perhaps PT Barnum was right and there is an innate desire to buy some magic potion to solve all our problems."

Harold mentioned me in his posting so I responded in a comment that I was also getting concerned because ...

"just as the word “e-learning” has been misused, the word “social learning” is also beginning to be abused. Articles or vendors that suggest that implementing social learning is simply about upgrading your LMS to a Social LMS or LMS 2.0 are completely missing the point."

These are only snippets from the posting and my comment, so do please read it all in full and join the discussion.  In particular I'd be interested to hear if you think we can prevent "social learning" being hi-jacked in the same way as the term "e-learning" was, or if this really is inevitable?
