TechCrunch has just announced the winners of the 2nd annual Crunchies competition "to recognize and celebrate the most compelling startups, internet and technology innovations of the year", and some of my predictions for top tools in 2009 have done well:
- Cooliris is the winner of the Best Design category. (Other nominees included Friendfeed and Sliderocket)
- Evernote is the winner of the Best Mobile Startup category. (Other nominees included Qik and Posterous)
- Friendfeed is the winner of the Best New Startup of 2008 category.
Other interesting winners are:
- Google Reader (for Best Application or Service)
- iPhone 3G (for Best New Gadget/Device)
- Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone of Twitter (for Best Startup Founder)
- Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook (for Best Startup CEO)
Facebook is the winner of the Best Overall Startup in 2008 with Twitter as runner-up. (Facebook is the winner for the second year, so people are therefore asking the inevitable question: "when is a startup no longer a startup?")
For the full list of winners see the Techcrunch blog post. The Crunchies 2008 site will be updated shortly.
These winners make a lot of sense to me, unlike some previous Techcrunch winners. Tools like these are heralding a golden age of learning. Lordy, I wish we had this stuff forty years ago! I'm off to try CoolIris, the only winner I don't already use. Thanks, Jane.
