I am frequently asked for a link to an introductory guide to social media and its use for leaning and performance improvement, so here is my guide. The contents list is shown in the screenshot below. This is a social resource as it also provides the opportunity for you to provide your own experiences of using social tools for learning.
UPDATE
This resource has now been updated, and available as 30 Ways to use Social Media to Work (& Learn) Smarter.
Great post! The best I've seen on introducing social media to beginners and I have to say that it is also a great review to those of us who are already involved in social media. Thank you again for a great post!

Hi Jane,
Your chart is very well organized and easy to follow. I'm not totally in the learning and performance area but there is much overlap in what I do. Your post will be a go to place for quick reference and use in workshops and training.
Thanks for doing this.

Thank you Jane. It's the first time I get into your blog, and quite accidentally, in searching for materials on social networking in education. It seems to me a most practical and helping post, and I have never encountered presenting information on social media in such a charming and practical way.

Dear Jane,
Great list. What about adding Howard Rheingold's Social Media Classroom in the final category (16)?

Paulo - there are many tools that could fit in each category. See the full Directory listings linked on the relevant pages.
