At 11.30 am today I am speaking at the NAACE conference in Blackpool.  My presentation is on  building a social learning environment.  I've written quite a lot about this subject on my website, but here I am going to approach it slightly differently and focus on is how you can create an open, learner-autonomy-supportive social environment using 4 different platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Ning & Elgg.

Online Educa Berlin

I'm here in Berlin for Onine Educa.  The pre-conference workshops take place today and I'm going to be dropping in on Jay Cross's "Informal Learning + Web 2.0 = Social Learning Breakthroughs" this afternoon).

The conference programme starts tomorrow, and I'm going to be involved in a number of sessions:

• Tools of the Trade (in the Creating the New Era of Corporate Learning stream)
  "In this session Jane will demonstrate some of the best tools for social learning on the site.  The session will provide you with a clear understanding of which social learning tools are available and fit-for-purpose for corporate use. Jane will discuss what tools organisations are using, and will provide practical advice on getting started and setting up informal and social learning tools so they add value to your organisation."

• 12 x 3D Tools for Education, Training & Collaboration (in the EU 3D: Ctrl+Alt+Delete session, chaired by Donald Clark and also including Chris Branningam CEO of Caspain Learning. 
  "In my presentation I'll be offering my pick of 12 tools for creating 3D characters, 3D environments and virtual worlds - for those who are dipping their toes into the water as well as those who are looking for high-end solutions."

  Note: I'll be making my presentation slides available on Friday too for those who won't be able to join us live.
• Battle of the Bloggers
  I'll be on the panel alongside Donald Clark, Ellen Wagner and Clive Shepherd and chaired by Bert de Coutere to "discuss some of the key issues arising at ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2009". Should be entertaining!

Learning Technologies 2010

The conference programme for the 2010 Learning Technologies Conference and Exhibition has now been announced.  The conference takes place 27-28 January 2009 at Olympia, London.

The keynote speakers this year are Lord Puttnam, Prof Stephen Heppell and Josh Bersin, and there is a impressive line up of other speakers - all put together by Donald Taylor, the Conference Chairman.

This year the presentations take place over 4 tracks

• Track 1: Learning Technology
• Track 2: Learning Strategy
• Track 3: Learning Issues
• Track 4: Learning Together

I am very pleased to have been invited to participate again, and this time I will be active in two sessions: Communities and Learning (in T1), and Collaboration tools (in T4).

The Economist Debate: Education and Technology

In 1843 The Economist invited its first crop of readers to take part in a "severe contest between intelligence, wich presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress".

164 years later; they reiterate their request.

Informal Learning: Learning despite the Training Department

The next eLearning Network Day is on Friday 25th May for "Informal Learning: Learning despite the Training Department".

The day’s events will be launched by Karen Ver, eLearning Business Manager from the CIPD. Karen will help the participants think through, "How do we learn what we know? How did we learn to learn? At work, how much of what we learn is mediated by a training and development department, and how much is just picked up as we go along?"n>

There will be presentations and case studies from the BBC, Skillsoft, Johnson & Johnson BabyCenter, ING Wholesale Banking and B&Q.

I will be starting the day off with a short introductory presentation: What is informal learning?
